What is MCP? A plain-English guide for Amazon sellers

Your AI is smart and blind. MCP gives it eyes on your Amazon account, and you decide whether it also gets hands.

Short answer

MCP (Model Context Protocol) is an open standard that lets AI apps like Claude and ChatGPT connect to other software through “servers” that offer tools. An Amazon MCP server lets your AI read live data from Amazon's official APIs, like orders, inventory, fees and ad performance, and, if you allow it, make changes you approve first.

MCP in one sentence

MCP, the Model Context Protocol, is a standard way for AI apps to plug into other software. People call it USB-C for AI: one shape of plug, and any app that supports it can use any server that offers it.

Anthropic introduced MCP as an open standard in November 2024. OpenAI, Google and Microsoft have since added support, so the same server works in Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor, VS Code and a growing list of other apps.

Why sellers should care

Without MCP, using AI on your Amazon numbers looks like this: export a CSV from Seller Central, export another from the ads console, paste both into a chat, hope it doesn't time out, then do it all again next week.

With an Amazon MCP server, you ask the question and the AI fetches the data itself, live, from Amazon:

  • “Why did sales drop last Tuesday?”
  • “Which SKUs will run out before the next shipment lands?”
  • “Where am I wasting ad spend this month?”

No exports. No stale numbers. No copy-paste.

How it works

There are three pieces:

  1. The client is your AI app: Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor and so on.
  2. The server is the thing you connect, like WavyCloud. It offers tools: small, named actions like “list orders” or “get FBA inventory.”
  3. The source is where the data lives. For Amazon, that's the Selling Partner API and the Amazon Ads API.

When you ask a question, the AI picks the tools it needs, calls them through the server, reads the results and answers. Most apps show each tool call in the chat, so you can see exactly what was asked and what came back.

Remote MCP servers run on the web, so there's nothing to install. You paste a URL into your AI app and sign in with OAuth, the same kind of sign-in as “Continue with Google.”

What to check before you connect one

An MCP server can be read-only or it can change things. For an Amazon account, that difference is your ad budget. Ask:

  • Official APIs? It should use Amazon's APIs and consent screens, not your password or a browser bot.
  • Read-only by default? You should switch on changes on purpose, per account.
  • Previews? Every change should show the exact payload before it happens, and wait for your yes.
  • Limits? A cap on how much one change can touch.
  • Buyer data? Your AI chat doesn't need your customers' names and addresses. A good server never asks Amazon for them.
  • Log? You should be able to see and export every change made.

WavyCloud does all six. Security and privacy has the details.

What you need to start

An AI app that supports custom connectors or remote MCP servers (usually a paid plan), your Amazon seller account, and about three minutes. Getting started walks through it.

Frequently asked questions

Is MCP safe for my Amazon account?

It's as safe as the server you connect. Choose one that uses Amazon's official APIs, starts read-only, previews every change and waits for your confirmation, and never requests buyer personal data.

Does MCP work with ChatGPT?

Yes. ChatGPT supports remote MCP servers as custom connectors on eligible plans. Claude, Cursor, VS Code, Claude Code, Windsurf and n8n support them too.

Do I need to know how to code to use MCP?

No. With a remote MCP server you paste one URL into your AI app and sign in. The coding happened on the server's side.

Is MCP made by Amazon?

No. MCP is an open standard introduced by Anthropic. Amazon's APIs are what an Amazon MCP server like WavyCloud connects to. WavyCloud is independent and not affiliated with Amazon.
